COMPUTERS

BASIC COMPUTER OPERATIONS
Class offers students the opportunity to learn operation and practical computer skills. The students will be afforded hands-on instruction and will take home real life computer skills they will use every day. Students begin with Basic Computer Operations and continue through the term with Windows XP, Microsoft Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint and Publisher. All computer classes are offered in a ‘learn at your own pace’ format, utilizing the instructor to assist and direct the student throughout all learning stages. Students that enroll for this class save 20% if all classes are taken. .

BASIC OPERATION
Basic computer operation teaches the student fundamental computer operation skills. Students will learn how to “Boot Up” the computer, use the mouse and keyboard, know what the “trash bin” is for, what “desktop” means and many more terms and basic skills. This class is for the basic beginner using a computer.

WINDOWS XP
Windows XP is the current operating system that combines some of the popular features of past systems with distinct new conveniences and features to help you get the most out of your computer. Students will learn operating skills and general features that will allow them to expand the use of their computer for personal or business need. This class expands on the Basic Operations class and will take students to the next level.

MICROSOFT WORD 2007
In this word processing software you will learn to create, edit, save, retrieve and print through hands-on practice. Introduction to some of the more advanced formatting techniques will be included.

MICROSOFT EXCEL 2007
Spreadsheet construction and modification, including data, formatting, creating formulas, working with multiple worksheets and graph creation are a few topics covered in this course.

MICROSOFT ACCESS 2007
Access is the tool to help you collect data and use it in different formats. This is an introduction to data-base concepts, table design and table properties, query design and usage, forms and form design, reports and report design, and macros. Learn the tips and tricks of creating a database and sorting data. .

MICROSOFT POWERPOINT 2007
Improve the way you create, present, and collaborate on presentations. Use enhanced multimedia capabilities to deliver presentations with more impact. PowerPoint will give you the options to do all of these and more. Students taking this class will learn to use PowerPoint and upon completion should be able to create their own presentation.

INTERNET FOR SENIORS
The internet is a great place to find information, products, and services. This class will give completers the ability to explore the internet safely. This class is designed for seniors who have had limited exposure to computers and the internet. Note the special time allowing the senior to take the class and not be away from home in the evening.

SETTING UP A HOME WIRELESS NETWORK
Completers of this class will have the basic knowledge to turn their homes into a wireless internet area. Wireless internet allows computers to access the internet without being wired into a phone line or DSL. This gives the user freedom to move about the house and use the internet for work, school or personal. This class will discuss the equipment needed and what modifications might be needed to your computer or laptop.

KEYBOARDING FOR PRE-SCHOOL
A class designed for four and five year olds. This class will allow students an introduction to keyboarding or using the computer as a typewriter. Students completing this class will have an advantage by knowing how to use the computer keyboard.

KEYBOARDING FOR ELEMENTARY
A class designed for first through third grade students. Older students will be considered if space allows. This class will allow students an introduction to keyboarding or using the computer as a typewriter. Students completing this class will have an advantage by knowing how to use the computer keyboard.

BUSINESS RELATED

ACCOUNTING I & II
Determine your level of accounting and sign up for the appropriate course. Accounting I teaches the basics or fundamentals. Accounting II expands on Accounting I allowing the student to experience the accounting principles for different types of businesses. Both classes will provide activities in accounting equations, accounting cycles, entering transactions in journals, posting to ledgers, end-of-period statements and reports, payroll systems and much more. If you need training for yourself or employees this class will meet your need. Students work at their own pace with a skilled instructor close by.

HEALTH RELATED

EMT – BASIC
Designed to prepare you in emergency care fields such as first responder, ambulance companies or fire departments. Completion of this program will afford students the skills and knowledge to set for the National EMT Registry Test. Successful completion of this test will allow the student licensure as an EMT in Missouri and Nationally.

EMT REFRESHER COURSE
The EMT-B refresher course is provided for current EMT-B’s to allow them the opportunity to receive continuing education unites that will allow the EMT-B to renew their licenses. This course will also allow students that have not taken the practical or written exam to receive additional instruction that will aid them in passing the EMT-B required tests.

EMT – INTERMEDIATE
EMT-Intermediate course covers theory and practice of procedural responsibilities delegated to the EMT-I. The course incorporates discussion, demonstration, and practical application in the following areas: Roles and responsibilities, emergency pharmacology, medication administration, EKG monitoring, airway management and ventilation, medical emergencies, trauma emergencies (trauma systems, Hemorrhage, shock, burns, head injury, and thoracic trauma), environmental emergencies, pediatrics, geriatrics, clinical decision making, scenarios and EMT-I protocols. The student will receive a minimum of 175 lecture hours and will have to do an additional 250 field internship hours after.

EMT-PARAMEDIC
This program is designed to review the basic skills learned in the EMT program plus provide instruction in the subject of advanced life support. The course will present advanced topics. The student will receive a minimum of 450 lecture/lab hours and approximately 450 hours of hospital and pre-hospital internship. This program will prepare the student to sit for the National Registry Certification Exam.

PHLEBOTOMY
Successful completion of this class will allow students to seek employment at facilities that draw, and preserve blood. Students will learn prescribed methods required to safely draw blood samples. Students are required to learn to draw blood samples for each other. Safe handling and preservation of the sample will also be instructed. Instruction will include successful blood draws under strict supervision in a medical facility.

Certified nurse Assistant
The CNA training program prepares individuals for employment in a long-term care facility. The program teaches skills in resident care under the direct supervision of a licensed nurse. The program consists of 75 classroom hours and 100 on-the-job training hours. Some of the topics covered include: basic nursing skills; fire safety; disaster training; resident safety and rights; and social and psychological problems of residents and the methods of caring for the mentally confused residents, such as those with Alzheimer's disease.

Certified Medication Technician
Persons working in a care facility and with a state approved CNA License may want to enroll in this class. Students who complete the class will receive certification as a Medication Technician as required by the State to distribute medication to residents in care facilities. Learn the dosage, type of medication and more as you study to become a Certified Medication Technician. Earn more money and become more valuable to your employer.

Medical Terminology
Medical terminology is a specialized language used by health care practitioners. It has its own vocabulary and ways of stringing together words in an acceptable understandable to everyone, format. This course in medical terminology will teach the basics of what makes up medical terms so you can not only use and understand them yourself, but be able to recognize and learn new terms when you come across them in the future. Most of all, believe it or not, you are going to have fun! Many medical terms have interesting, even weird meanings or stories behind their evolution as words.

CPR and First Aid
CPR is training in how to restore heartbeat and breathing according to the American Heart Association by means of external heart compression and mouth-to-mouth resuscitation. The class provides training in one-man CPR on adults and children and also provides training on how to save a choking victim. This course will be geared towards individuals who are in a responsible position such as: teachers, sponsors, club leaders, coaches, etc. Participants will learn the proper treatment in emergencies as well as hands-on-experience to treat minor injuries.


PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT

BASIC STICK WELDING
This class is for the beginner that has never touched a welding machine, but has wanted to learn how to weld. This class will teach basic techniques of welding using the shielded metal arc transfer process, or “stick welding” for short. People who complete this class will be able to make satisfactory welds for personal use. Completers will receive a certificate of completion. Students who complete this class should consider taking the Advanced Stick Welding Class

ADVANCED STICK WELDING
If you have the basic welding knowledge, you can make a satisfactory weld repair, but you want to do more and learn more this is a good class to take. The instructor will take students with welding knowledge and skills and help them improve their skills as a stick welder. Different welding electrodes or “rods” will be used and discussed. Completers should be able to get entry level jobs in the shielded metal arc welding field. Students who successfully complete this class will receive a certificate of completion.

BASIC INDUSTRIAL ELECTRIC
Learn a skill you can turn into a career change. Industrial electricians are in demand and this class will help get you in the door. Learn how to wire, connect, troubleshoot, install and maintain electric components in an industrial setting. Students will find this class challenging but rewarding. Skills learned may be turned into a job in industrial maintenance.

INTRODUCTION TO DIESEL TECHNOLOGY
Diesel Technology highly technical program designed to prepare students to use critical thinking skills to explore basic diesel technology and apply these skills in the service and maintenance of medium and heavy-duty trucks and similar equipment, including farm and construction equipment. Students will learn how to operate various equipment including electronic diagnostic analyzers, precision measuring devices, wheel alignment equipment, hydraulic presses, and cranes in a brand new state-of–the art diesel lab.

PERSONAL FINANCE
Examine the primary topics of spending, debt, and saving. You will be provided tools and techniques that will allow you to make good spending decisions, avoid and eliminate debt, illustrate the importance of saving for your future, and just how easy it is to incorporate these strategies in to your life. Explore important decisions such as buying a new car vs. used, buying a fuel-efficient vehicle, credit card use and the ramifications of making minimum payments, accelerating your mortgage, selecting your insurance deductible, starting a savings program at a young age and the Magic of Compound Interest, prioritizing your savings goals, and much more. This is a course you cannot afford to miss!

EXPLORING JOB POSSIBILITIES
Come explore job openings in the area and beyond. We will use a group of would be employers to discuss current needs and future requirements, education requirements and more. Come and learn what you might do to make yourself more employable.

Home Improvement – Drywall
Learn how to repair simple drywall issues such as nail pops, loose sheets, cracks and more. Save money and do the work yourself after learning the basics of drywall repair

Home Improvement – Electric
This course does not make you an electrician; however you will learn how to change a simple light switch, receptacle, or light fixture. Learn to do the simple things before calling the expert.

Home Improvement – Plumbing
Plumbing can be a very tricky issue in a home. This course will not make you a plumber however it will show you what to look for when checking for leaky pipes, fixtures and other related plumbing issues. Learn how to talk with the plumber and explain what needs to be repaired, replaced or constructed.


HOBBIES

VEGETABLE GARDENING
In this class you will start by examining the characteristics and needs of various vegetable crops. Then learn the steps needed to create a simple garden plan and accompanying planting calendar. Along the way you will receive information on choosing varieties that will work best. Learn about garden maintenance and troubleshooting, as well as harvesting tips.

FLOWER GARDENING
Having your own flower garden can be a wonderful experience and can add beauty and joy to your home and yard. Before you begin planting your flower garden, you should carefully plan a few things to ensure that they grow healthy and that your garden remains beautiful and long lasting. Come and learn the tips and tricks of flower gardening, from choosing the right flowers to pest control.

PHOTOGRAPHY COMPOSITION AND STRATEGIES
This class will demonstrate the use, features, and composition using a digital SLR camera.

PHOTOSHOP TIPS AND TECHNIQUES
This class will demonstrate the fundamentals, tips, and tricks used in Adobe Photoshop CS5 and CS5 Bridge.

Eating for a healthy lifestyle
This class will focus on healthy eating and living. Completers will know the basics about choosing foods that will allow them to live better and feel better. It will show how making small changes can lead to big changes in your overall health.

Exercising for a healthy lifestyle
This class is designed to show the completers how to exercise correctly to attain a healthier living style.

FAFSA FRENZY
February 12, 2012 Pike-Lincoln Technical center will be open from 12:00 to 2:00 pm to help all area post secondary fill out the Free Application for Financial Student Aid or FAFSA. This document is fill out on-line and used to determine the amount of federal student aid and some state student aid. You do not need to be a student or intending to enroll in Pike-Lincoln Technical Center to attend this event. Counselors will be on hand to help with questions regarding financial aid and to help fill out the on-line document. You will need to bring your 2011 taxes or have knowledge of the information on the taxes and knowledge of you financial history and holdings.
